The Quick, The Bad, and the Ugly

What does white bread, cornflakes, and sodas have in common?

Ok, ok, besides being unhealthy!!

These high carb foods caused brachial arteries to distend for several hours causing reduced functioning that leads to health problems.

Excuse me while I go throw up now.

Well, they're not throwing up in Tel Aviv. There, they are making history!

Dr. Michael Shechter of Tel Aviv University's Sackler School of Medicine and the Heart Institute of Sheba Medical Center was able to visualize what happens inside our arteries before, during and after eating high carb foods - a first in medical history.

His treatment allows patients to see in real time if they are at risk of a heart attack.

His suggestion? Stick to foods that are low in sugar like legumes, fruits and vegetables, and oatmeal, etc. In other words: real food. It behooves us to find the combos that work for us. That is, we don't like millet, maybe try quinoa. It is an endeavor that can save our lives.

5 Worst Fast-Food Breakfasts

I saw an article on Yahoo called 5 Worst Fast Food Breakfasts (and what you should order instead)

It's a nice idea of promoting healthier foods. My own concerns...

The focus is on calories, but is it the only issue?

What about the fact that cheap canola oil is probably being used? Loads of preservatives? MSG? Or that some of these breakfast foods could actually be made AT HOME??!(and probably taste better) But that would mean a whole different way of thinking and organizing life which could be veeery dangerous 'cuz breakfast foods means Subway, McDonald's, and don't you forget it!

Astragalus

I am getting acquainted with a new friend: the herb Astragalus, a native plant in Asia. It is considered as one of the most important herbs in traditional Chinese Medicine.

One key function of this herb is to strengthen the immune system.

In Chinese Medicine, it is believed that the immunity or wei qi hovers around the nose, mouth, and skin. It protects against incoming germs and pathogens. When our immunity or wei qi is compromised, it become easier to catch a cold or just get sick.

Astragalus works by increasing the body's white blood cells (the body's defense system) and acts as a strong anti-biotic-stopping the activity of certain microbes.

The root of astragalus is boiled in water. Either 4 ounces of fresh astragalus root or 3 to 5 tablespoons of dried astragalus root. Boil for a few minutes, strain, and drink.

Cabbage -n- Cru (ciferous) Awareness Month

Last month was Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Although, I know we are trying to raise awareness for women to be healthy, I believe the the idea of 'breast cancer awareness' is a play on psychology.

As if we are on the lookout to detect it via mammograms. I would much prefer to focus on the powerful foods around us that will not only keep breast cancer at bay but a whole host of other baddies.

so

Cruciferous vegetables include cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, bok choy KALE, radishes, and turnips.

Whoa, when was the last time I had broccoli? Brussel sprouts I refuse to touch b/c I just have a reaaally bad memory of my father forcing us to eat it. But I'm all for trying the other crucifers.

Did you know that "The American Institute for Cancer Research acknowledges that various elements of cruciferous vegetables stop cancer cell growth in breast tumors, uterine lining, lung, colon, liver, and cervix." Natural News

Also "it is known that women who eat a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables are less likely to have fibroids. In addition, consuming plenty of dark green vegetables, such as kale and cabbage is thought to help reduce fibroid size." Women's Health

In an era where many are stricken with cancers, this is the time to reach for the medicines that Hashem has lovingly passed on to us!

Ok, crucifers are healthy, but how the hell we cook those hard things AND maintain their nutrients?? We'll find alot of recipes that look delicious but the veggies are cooked way too long. We can eat that for sure. But to also include semi-raw veggies is crucial

Check out: Steam-Vegetables

The link show ways to blanche and steam vegetables. This way the veggies are just slightly cooked. And it may be awkward at first to incorporate crucifers into the diet. After all, we are so used to eating something else. If we persevere, surely these life-giving veggies will become our good friends.

And Noah Had Four Sons...

This Shabbath we read the Torah portion on Noah and the Flood.

This is also the Torah portion where after the flood, Noah gets plum drunk and naked. Ham, Noah's son sees his father naked and according to Chazal defiled him. Noah, upon discovering the misdeed, utters a curse.

Yes, the curse.

The 'curse of Ham' where everyone but everyone hands over to Black people b/c Ham is considered Black.

For years, I took this view as truth without ever digging deeper. I am really embarrassed to admit that. And really, what are Black folks supposed to do with that? "oh, yes, I am cursed. Ok,so what's for lunch today?"

Even if we brush it off, this lingering thought remains in the back of our minds. "I am cursed. I am black. I am not white."

But, readers, open up the Chumash again with me and see Noah's words, "and he said, cursed is Canaan; a slave of slaves shall he be to his brothers." (Bereshit 9:25)

Why curse Canaan instead of Ham? Briefly, I'll mention that some say that cursing Ham would implicate Noah's own wrongdoing. So he remained silent on that point. Secondly, it's said that he could foresee that this particular negative trait in Ham was magnified in Ham's son Canaan.

The curse is on Canaan. It says nothing of the curse being on Cush, Miztrayim, or Put, the other sons of Ham. (But it doesn't excuse Ham!)

In fact, the following story is regarding Nimrod, a mighty hunter before G-d and son of Cush. Bereshit 10:10 states " The beginning of his kingdom was Babel, Erech, Accad, and Calneh in the land of Shinar."

Nimrod's kingdom.

Kingdom, folks.

Not slavery.

But there are those that want to propagate the idea that all Blacks are cursed. It can be in mainstream media. It could even be in your local synagogue, history class, or the 'fake friend to the Blacks.' They are all pollutants that encourage us to believe what 'they' want us to believe and to lull us into a stupor of low self-esteem, passivity, and illness. Illness of body and soul.

It's easy to recognize the poison after awhile. In the meantime, I am here to tell you that we are not slaves! (unless we choose to be one 'cuz it really takes a lot LESS brain power) The African/Black race have made/are making contributions to humanity, through the arts, music, literature and sciences like other people. And we are going to work, paying bills, reading books, going to school, etc. Are there things that need improvement? Most certainly. Like in most people.

I'll share something else. In Midrash Pirke de Rabbi Eliezer, it writes that Shem, Noah's son was dark.

I doubt you'll read that in mainstream media...

But let us not get trumped over color issues. It is because haters use this color card that we are often on the defensive and hence, become too focused on color. The fact is: there are other issues. The color card is merely a means of distraction.

Distraction from the true purpose of life.

Yo, what IS the purpose of life??!!!

Ah, but this is for another blog post....

Noah's Ark...and Ours.

The work 'ark' is translated as 'teiva' in our holy Torah.

The Baal Shem Tov teaches us that the 'teivah' also means WORD.

So when Hashem/G-d says, "bo el hateiva'-"come with Me into the ‘teivah’ it's like he says ” enter with Me into the words of ‘our’ prayers.

Although considered righteous, Noah is criticized for not really helping his fellow men in his generation to repent. Hashem says over and over again that He is going to destroy the world.

I always remember the words of one of my teachers, Rabbi Edward Hoffman, that tzaddikim show us where the dead ends are, so we don't make the same mistakes.

Noah was a tzaddik, and he 'allows' his story to be told so that we can learn from it.

It is our responsibility to use our 'teivot'/words pray for each other and the entire world. Certainly we will pray for our own needs, and even that should be done in truth.

If something hurts, tell Hashem, "it hurts!"

He wants us to be real.

He also wants our gratitude and acts of loving kindness. We can thank G-d for the big things and also for the 'little' things. And learning from Noah's story, let us remember to not just gape at others we deem as wayward, etc. Instead, we can raise our teivot/our words and sincerely pray for the world.

There's LOTS to pray for...

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Fascinating article I read on Dr. Mercola's website re: breast cancer awareness month.

Here are some highlights:

1. why is prevention associated with 'early detection?'

"If women succumb to the idea of prevention as doing nothing but waiting for the detection of the disease, many will find a similarly deranged logic re-emerge later when the self-fulfilling prophecy of prevention-through-doing-nothing is fulfilled and "treatment" is now required. "

Interesting play on psychology...

2. Who profits?

"Zeneca Group plc., a pharmaceutical subsidiary of Imperial Chemical Industries and manufacturer of the blockbuster breast cancer drugs Arimidex and Tamoxifen, founded the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in 1985 in order to promote the widespread adoption of x-ray mammography (and the sale of their products)."

How about we start a Cabbage Awareness Month...I'd love to see more folks buying and eating cabbage with it's G-d infused healing properties.

The following month will be a Tumeric Awareness Month...

"Billions of dollars are raised and funneled towards drug research, when the lowly turmeric plant, the humble cabbage and the unassuming bowl of miso soup may offer far more promise in the prevention and treatment of breast cancer than all the toximolecular drugs on the market put together"

Personally, the only 'pink' ribbons I'd like to see is the purple strips of cabbage on my plate.

G-d bless!

End of Money?

Tom Greco's book, End of Money and the Future of Civilization is coming out and revealing the 'secrets' of today's economy.

Follow the link below and hear him talk about:

how the political money system finances lavishly destructive activities of war

how the substance of modern money is credit

how the public has been made responsible for writing off bad debts

how our founding fathers in America never intended the government to have direct taxing power, but how that has been IGNORED

how the central banks enable inflation and monopolization of credit and create CLASS CONFLICT

how sociopaths seem to be the ones at the top of the hierarchy

how we need to shift power to the local communities

how we need to exercise the power that is already ours

how we can 'spin' our own money through the fibers of trust and cooperation

and how we can tell our 'would-be-masters' we do not need their money

this is very powerful.

India Charms Africa...

Just like bees buzz around a nectar full flower, so are countries buzzing around Africa, with her bountiful natural resources.

China had a head start, but unfortunately has been accused of resource plundering, poor labor practices, and supporting governments with a much less than desired human rights policy. Thus, resulting in resentment in Africa for the Chinese presence.

Enter India.

Hoping to appear as having Africa's best interest at heart, India has employed a 'charm offensive' policy so that both countries can benefit from the relationship. Examples include a Pan-African e-Network-"described as the biggest project for long-distance education and tele-medicine ever undertaken in Africa."
Among other perks, they are also promising 22,000 scholarship for African students.

I could care less whether India truly cares for Africa or not. But I do care that they are coming with the correct respect and mutually beneficial projects where Africa will also benefit.

To enter a country and rape its resources, spread disease, and preach their religion is inhumane, economically idiotic, and EVIL.

Let us hope that India will come thru with their side of the bargain, and that Africa will have good sense to discern it.

India versus Monsanto

I saw this article, and it made me soooo happy!!!

People are standing up against Monsanto-the biotech company responsible for making genetically modified organisms/(food).

For the first time ever, a country is suing Monsanto.

India is accusing Monsanto of biopiracy-of stealing indigenous plants, specifically the brinjal. Brinjal is very popular Indian staple. India believes that Monsanto is stealing the plants in order to make genetically modified versions and selling them w/o giving any compensation to India.

It could take years, but the Indian government feels it's important to send the message out as a deterrent.

I hope other countries learn from this example.

This is truly exciting news. Monsanto has to understand that they cannot create frankenstein seeds and 'foods' and destroy our farms and essentially our lives.

Go India! Get'em good!

USDA Organic

"What does certified organic or "USDA Organic" mean? This means these products are certified 95-100% organic. Certified organic means the farmer or producer has undergone a regular inspection of its farm, facilities, ingredients, and practices by an independent Third Party certifier, accredited by the USDA National Organic Program (NOP)"

So if you're looking for spoonful of synthetic pesticides, animal drugs, sewage sludge, GMOs, irradiation, or chemical fertilizers, this is not the place to look!

That said, have I personally taken a tour of USDA facility? No. Have you? No.
Read up on the dark side of USDA: http://www.naturalnews.com/031783_USDA_nature.html

Making things from scratch and keeping things simple is always THE BEST way to go. Yes, it may take a bit longer and it may even require growing our own produce. But we have to know how to work around healthy eating. Healthy eating is living!!!

Yom Kippur

Yom Kippur is tomorrow night. The days leading up to has been full of prayers, teshuva, forgiving others, and I'd say some excitement. On the day itself, there is a sort of transcendent magic.

Everyone dons their white garments, and there we are, standing before G-d, angelic... without our leather shoes, naked in a sense.

Without eating or drinking, without our body or mind preoccupied.

Without our perfumes and lotions and without our masks and pretenses.

Without bathing and without hiding our defects.

Without marital relations, with Him alone.

Yom Kippur...it's the ultimate spiritual, physical, and emotional de-tox experience!!! We go back to our Beginning, back to our Source, back to Hashem, G-d the Almighty.

Namibian Ancestral Skulls

Between 1904 and 1908, German colonial forces stationed in Namibia took many archeological skulls from the African country back to Germany. Why? To prove through science the superiority of their white race over the blacks.

On September 30, 2011, a delegation from Namibia-over 60 leaders and some officials flew to Berlin, Germany to take back their ancestral artifacts.

With the immense evil and killings that occurred in Europe, a lot in Germany, men like Hitler (may his name be erased) showed nothing of superiority, but only proved the banality and cruelty of like racists.

Get up, Stand Up!!!

Taking Down Monsanto and GMO Foods

I read an article today that got me so excited.

Groups, "Organic Consumers Association, Dr. Bronner's Magic Soap, Center for Food Safety, Mercola.com, Nature's Path, Natural News.com, LabelGMOs.org, Food Democracy Now, and the Institute for Responsible Technology, filed papers with the California Attorney General's office to place a Citizens Initiative on the Ballot in November, 2012 that would require mandatory labeling of genetically engineered foods and food ingredients."

In Europe, it is law that foods must be labeled if they are genetically engineered, but in America no such law exists and therefore all sorts of food stuff and ingredients can be sold to the American consumer w/o their knowledge. Monsanto, the "biotech bully" are really heading the GMO production, and it's fantastic that people are gathering together to end their tyranny!

This is what we need!! Strength, courage, prayer, and action! Consumer power can really shift the tide to our benefit. And why not?? If we are going to pay money to buy food, it better be the real deal and not some rip-off!

Right now, the Citizens' Initiative is in need of volunteers, donations, and signatures to help forward the cause.

Happy Rosh HaShana!!

Tonight is Rosh HaShana. The beginning of a new Jewish year. Today is the special day that we crown G-d as our King.

How blessed are we to be the King's children and to be under His wings.

I marvel how I take it for granted that every day Hashem takes care of us without a word and without a complaint!

He waters the earth and gives us nourishment.

He protects us when we go on our way and gets us home safely.

The media is so excited to report when things go awry in the world, they are quick to zero in on the negative things of life, and it leaves us wondering if Hashem really cares!!

Well, we know the media is very biased against Blacks and Jews.

But it is also very biased against G-d!!

We want Hashem to judge us favorably? Well, let us judge Him favorably. Let us thank Him sincerely for taking care of us this past year. For taking care of the millions and millions of people, the thousands and thousands of animals, for bringing out the sun every day, for keeping the oceans and seas in their assigned space, for keeping our respiration flowing, for bringing life into the world, for sustaining life, for.....

It is truly too much to list....

I humbly thank you, Hashem, my G-d.

G-d bless!!

When an Orange met a Banana...

This post is in memory of Sarah Deena Rochel bat Yehudit.

Our Sages share with us the idea that before the sickness comes, Hashem/G-d/the Almighty already brought forth the antidote. Before the problem occurs, the solution is already present.

This is very powerful.

B/c in this world, where illness of all sorts abounds, we must understand that the cures exist. We must also understand the absurdity of waiting until we are sick before we start taking measures towards health. No!!! We must understand that true healing requires going back to our Source.

And the time for action is NOW!!!

In His goodness and mercy, Hashem foresaw it all: the diabetes, the obesity, the cancers...

And He has infused the world we live in with medicine. YES! The medicines are all around us. And thankfully, these medicines do not only come in the form of bitter herbs. (although some do and that's cool, too) They come in the sweetness of fruits, in the crunch of nuts and seeds, in the earthiness of herbs, in the breath that we take, in the happiness of our hearts, in the simplicity of life, in the belief in G-d, in the belief of ourselves, in the stretch and the courage in our limbs....

Burrowed deep into the simplest fruits and vegetables lay traces of the healing power of G-d.

This is a big deal, y'all!!!

I had a friend, Sarah Deena Rochel, who recently passed away from leukemia. She was barely twenty! I remember her always be so bubbly and cheerful. It hurts me very much. It was diagnosed before I got full swing into my whole health track- although I don't know if there was anything I could have done to help. She basically got put in the medical wash machine and that pretty much finished her. No natural approach whatsoever.

*Sigh.

A study was done in the University of California Berkley re: leukemia (cancer of the bone marrow) and this was one of their findings: "children who regularly ate oranges and/or bananas during their first two years of life had a reduced risk of developing childhood leukemia. Oranges are full of vitamin C. Vitamin C is a well known antioxidant and is also known for its anticancer effects. Bananas contain a high amount of potassium. Potassium is a mineral that has also shown to have some anti-cancer benefits."

Oranges and bananas.

Bananas and oranges.

But we must be wise, my friends. As we speak, corporate companies like Monsanto (may this name be erased!) are plotting to end normal seeds and foods as we know it to create GM foods, genetically modified foods.

Garbage!!!

First off, these seeds do not reproduce from year to year. Hashem created foods just fine, we don't need greedy corporate suits messing with them. So be SURE to boycott GM foods. Be sure to support farmers who are growing natural, organic foods.

Y'see, it's very easy to get overwhelmed with all of this. Sometimes it seems the corporate suits are just too savvy, too quick, and too strong.
But consumer power is just that: Power.

And it gets the corporate suits exactly where it hurts the most. They cannot be in charge of our foods and our future. Period.

We are in control, and the moment we realize our power, the world will be a different playing field completely. We have to believe in our power, believe in our own goodness, and believe in G-d's goodness.
Thank the Almighty, I have another friend who was diagnosed with cancer. How she fought!! She insisted on pushing off radiation for as long as she could, instead de-toxing the junk out and building her body with natural medicines and going to see a natural doctor.

Today, beloved reader, she is waiting to see if all the cancer is gone! She is doing exercises, getting strong, and has got her adult children into a more healthy life style as well.

Hodu L' Hashem Ki Tov!! Thank G-d who is good!

We mustn't lose hope, and the healing words of health and love must be spread fast and wide. We are depending on you! And feed oranges and bananas to your loved ones. The truth is there has also been breakthroughs with grape seed extract re: leukemia. I want to read up more about it, but I'll give a source at the end.

Slowing Down and Getting Strong....

Incandescent vs. Fluorescent Lighting

At a recent class with naturalist guru Shoshana Harrari, I was shocked to hear about the dangers of fluorescent lighting. In America, Congress is phasing out incandescent light bulbs (the usual light bulb that I am familiar with) by 2014 and pushing for fluorescent (CFLs) bulbs. Apparently, CFLs save more energy than the old kinds.

Perhaps the best energy saver and health saver is relying more on sunlight and using these bulbs only occasionally...

However, people should be in the know!

The Chale Wote Street Festival showcased some of Ghana's amazing creativity.

Artists, musicians, writers and various organizations came together to make the first annual street art festival. Chale wote is the name for the flip flop sandals worn by many Ghanaians.

Follow the link to below to Nana Kofi Acquah's breath taking picture blog to catch some highlights.

Goal This Week: Reduce Wheat

Was away with friends on Shabbath and ate so much junk food. It is really hard to eat healthy food when you're out on the road.

Goal this week: reduce wheat, ie. bread

Eat more grains and raw salads.

This should be interesting b/c I really like bread stuffs. Its known to be a comfort food. But I always notice the extra weight gain when I eat bread.

Ok, getting on track. I think the key is having healthy food ready for when I am hungry. Wish me luck!

Making a Salad for Lunch

Hmm....now what should I put in it....

G-d bless!

Po-ta-toe

Just read on Yahoo health that potatoes when eaten with fat, like olive oil reduces the effects of the supposedly high glycemic index. The oil slows the absorption of the carbohydrates. So instead of one's blood sugar spiking high, it rises more gradually and therefore more safely.

Good to know.

Synergy! Synergy!

Rhythm

"Where I come from we say that rhythm is the soul of life because the whole universe revolves around rhythm; and when we get out of rhythm, that's when we get into trouble. For this reason the drum, next to the human voice, is our most important instrument. It is special."

Rights of the Birthing Woman

Between doctors being quick to the draw and women needing better understanding, Cesarean section rates are on the rise.
According to ABC News, "It is now the most common surgical procedure in American hospitals: one in every three babies in the U.S. now come into the world by caesarian section."

What we need here, ladies is information.

Here is a list of Rights of Childbearing Women that will come in handy:

http://www.childbirthconnection.org/article.asp?ck=10084&ClickedLink=0&area=2

* Every woman has the right to information about the professional identity and qualifications of those involved with her care, and to know when those involved are trainees.*

* Every woman has the right to full and clear information about benefits, risks and costs of the procedures, drugs, tests and treatments offered to her, and of all other reasonable options, including no intervention.* She should receive this information about all interventions that are likely to be offered during labor and birth well before the onset of labor.

* Every woman has the right to accept or refuse procedures, drugs, tests and treatments, and to have her choices honored. She has the right to change her mind.* (Please note that this established legal right has been challenged in a number of recent cases.)

* Every woman has the right to freedom of movement during labor, unencumbered by tubes, wires or other apparatus. She also has the right to give birth in the position of her choice.*

Check out the website for more info.

I have attended births and have heard stories from friends, and I will not lie. It can be a fight. These rights exist, but medical staff tend to be more content when the laboring mother is nicely tucked away on her bed without a voice, cut and done so they can leave at their shift's end.

The fear factor is a major manipulation tool to get the woman to comply without questions. To think fast on one's feet is not easy when one's baby is 'at stake.' But this does not need to be. That is one reason it is VITAL to have a doula/labor coach as a support for the woman at birth.

After seeing 20 minutes of normal fetal monitoring, staff are usually willing to unhook the device. If they don't offer it, the mother can request it.

Labor pain increases when the woman is lying on her back. So once, the fetal monitoring plugs are off, get up and move!! The gravity will greatly work to her advantage in terms of pain reduction, positioning the baby correctly, and letting the body find its rhythm.

With the hospital setting being often a foreign and intrusive space for the birthing woman, I feel home births with a qualified mid-wife is the best way to go. And many women feel the same way. I mentioned it to a friend recently, and she recoiled in horror. "Birth at home?!" And yet, that is how it was done before our "civilized" society...

Yet, today we have the backing of technology. It is even BETTER than how it was!

I am all for medical intervention when it is needed. But the fact is the hospital setting is its own battleground...

Know our rights and know what works.

The Romona Moore Legal Defense Fund

Romona Moore's mother needs our help.

Her daughter, Romona, a straight A Psych student had went missing. Her mother pleaded with the NYPD police for help. They refused to file a report b/c she was 21 years old. Not a minor.

Contrast that to story of Svetlana Aronov, also NOT a minor, who went missing, and the NYPD police going full out in order to find her.

This is clearly a WRONG.

Romona's mother is suing the NYPD for discrimination. YES!

This is what is needed.

How can this be tolerated, people?

How can it be that the law-enforcers should turn their back when someone is pleading for help??!!

Did Romona Moore have a chance???

Our prayers, our passion, our strength, and our DOLLARS MUST go to support this cause. This is OUR cause. When I pick up the phone to call the police, there MUST be a positive response. To let this incident pass without outcry will set a precedent that we CANNOT afford.

G-d help us all....

I saw when your Sun began to shine....on my Moon

5:53 sunrise smiles on Tsefat skies
as twilight croons home to claim her prize

saffron rays marks a mystic light show
kindled sparks ripen into a husky glow

Summon cave winds and dew-cool lush
to sweeten a deep thought purpl-y plush

seraphim, ofanim 'round and thunder
the moment day and night are wrent 'sunder

flows the ancient, the age old lullaby
that sparks the sigh and then the battle cry

skies, hazy spazy crazy bright blues
blends with clouds of creamy puff hues

5:53 sunrise smiles on Tsefat skies
as twilight croons home to claim her prize

I saw when your sun began to shine

That's the EXACT opposite of what Azamra/finding the good points is based on.

120 Sayings of the 200 year old man....

Hat tip to Asher Lazar, Carpathian Mountain House Macrobiotic (excerpt)

* Health nuts are hard to crack.

* Once you think you are The Author, you will probably end up doing something unauthorized.

* It's curious how one can be competent at ignoring his own shortcomings but is determined not to ignore those of others.

* How does sickness form? When some inferior life-form (e.g. a virus) has more passion and fervor for living than you.

* Don't weigh another person unless you tip the scales in their favor.

* What is sour power? Eating fermented foods, pickled foods, and sourdough breads - that's sour power!

* Someone who uses the word "I" a lot has damaged "I"-sight.

* Most things in the world exist to make you resist.

* Two causes of health problems: eating foods over seasoned or out of season.

* One must reside in a cocoon before he can emerge as a butterfly.

Azamra...Africa!!!

Azamra in Hebrew means "I will sing."

I am making a series of articles called Azamra...Africa! specifically noting the beauty of Africa: it's people, it's culture, it's geography, it's history.

In mainstream media, there is all this talk of how terrible it is on the African continent. Granted, every place has its challenges, but the way Africa is portrayed, one could easily think that there is only

a vastness of life-less desert and poverty.

We know that ain't true.

In Judaism, Rabbi Nachman emphasized finding the good points within ourselves and others. Africa is bursting with goodness and richness, and we are gonna celebrate that right here.

Africa is the oldest civilization. Ours is undeniably intertwined with hers- whether we like it or not. The good points in Africa are ultimately the good points within us.

Today I'm checking out the Tingatinga Art.
This art form was first developed in the southern area of Tanzania by the Makua tribe. Whether on walls, leather, wood or rocks, artists would use these mediums to express their views and opinions.

Edward Said Tingatinga really developed this art form and originated amazing and beautiful paintings.

What a Joke...

I saw the most absurd article on Yahoo Health about cancer prevention.

You can check it out and see for yourselves.

Three advice for cancer prevention:
1. More exercise
I agree with that.

2. An aspirin a day for anti-inflammatory effects.
Aspirin???!!!
You've got to be kidding! They're going to opt for something synthetic rather
than natural? We've got an arsenal ranging from vegetables to spices like curcurim or tumeric to herbs, and they're going to pick aspirin. And they even caution that overuse can cause ulcers.

3. Milk for vitamin D.
It's true vitamin D helps prevent cancers, but to advise milk versus natural sunlight! Super-market milk is loaded with estrogen disrupting hormones that will cause a host of problems. If it's not good for fibroids, it definitely ain't good for cancer.

This is the "expert" advice?? No mention of anything green...
No mention of how too much sugar creates an acidic environment that promotes cancer growth.

Mainstream media and business don't give a wink about our health, y'all, if you haven't already guessed it.
Thankfully, most of the readers who left comments on this article did not agree with the advice given.

And neither should you!

Geez, if this wasn't so serious, I'd crack up laughing.

Health Habits Around the Globe

There's a Yahoo's article about 6 health secrets from around the globe ranging from India's tumeric spice, Japanese's chewing food well, to Russian herbal teas. It seems the keys are unprocessed and natural foods, slowing down, and getting exercise.

To add my 7th health habit...

Rabbi Nachman, a Jewish sage writes that the weak man is one who is unaware of his strength. It is crucial for us to constantly seek out the good points in ourselves. When we do, we will have the motivation to advance, act, and build in our lives.

A person can be doing everything right health wise and still get sick. We know that emotions play a vital role in health. When we feel glum and negative over an extended period of time, this creates a disturbance in our energy flow and eventually in our organs. However, positive and happy feelings keep things moving.

In an age where TV, mags, billboards, and propaganda galore tries us to make us believe we are supposed to be like THAT and not like we are, it is very difficult for us to see the good points in ourselves.

Don't be fooled!!!

We are bursting with inner and outer beauty, my friends. Our smallest good points mean SO much!! These points are the starting place for even more good. There is power in the most simplest matter.

I'm happy to incorporate some tumeric spice in my cooking. And I'm going to push to chew my food better. But plz G-d, I want to always be able to see the good points in myself and to improve my world with that good.

G-d bless!!

Black Sunscreens-Inside Out

Blacks suffering from melanoma/skin cancer??

Apparently studies show that Blacks are most likely than Whites to have late stage skin cancer-which seem illogical considering that the dark pigmentation would be a protection against the sun's hot rays.

Well, if we take our lovely dark pigmentation and add a lather of sunscreen on, we're actually asking for trouble.

"Sunscreens were never developed to prevent skin cancer," This is from editor Zoe Diane Draelos from the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology. In fact, many sunscreen products contain cancer producing ingredients like oxybenzone which is a hormone disruptor. Others say that titanium dioxide and zinc oxide nanoparticles are also hazardous. Although the Environmental Working Group state that these substances are effective in blocking out UV rays without penetrating healthy skin.

Yikes! That's still scary.

Vitamin D is taking the lead in prevention of cancer. A sensible amount of sunlight exposure actually reduces the risk of cancer. So, if folks with darker complexion put on sunscreen, it's like a double barrier, and vitamin D deficiencies become rampant. Less vitamin D= more cancer. And hence, this is why Blacks may have more cases of skin cancer. We're running away from the very source that will make us stronger!

Another fascinating point is nutrition.

Of course.

We can actually create a natural sunscreen from the inside out. The more anti-oxidant powered fruits and vegetables we eat, the stronger our skin can withstand the sun's rays. The less we burn!

Y'all, this is something the sunscreen companies will NEVER reveal. In fact, "skin cancer can only be caused when UV exposure is combined with chronic nutritional deficiencies that create skin vulnerabilities."

This is wild stuff.

Another reason to eat our greens.

Spread the word.

Green is in. Sun is in. Chemicals are out.

Vitamin D is key. Sunlight exposure is crucial-to a point. Natural protection for my fair-skinned friends is important. I recently saw a picture of women in Madagascar with a yellow-orange tumeric root paste on their skin. It is their natural sunscreen. Although I don't think anyone in the West is keen on walking down the street with a bright orange face, we should look into natural products. The EWG has an online guide of natural products to check the ingredients for safety.

Then again, one can choose to make one's own sunblock....

Juvenile Arthritis

I met a young girl on Shabbath suffering from juvenile arthritis. She was really withdrawn and apparently is taking medications to relieve her pain.
Her mother shared a story how the youngster pushed herself last week to be a help for another child going through the same illness.

I wanted to break down and cry.

This girl was so young-fragile looking.

After Shabbath, I ran to the computer to read more about this illness. And not just the Western allopathic perspective! In Chinese Medicine, juvenile arthritis is seen as imbalance in the organ energies, specifically the liver and spleen. The body begins to attack itself. The health of the parents during conception, nutrition, and positive thinking are factors that play a big role. Fortunately, it seems that children can outgrow it as their immune system becomes stronger.

(What makes a body attack itself? What makes a person attack himself thru negative self talk?)
As we know a happy mind makes for a happy body.

And a happy body is a big blessing.

Foods that aggravate arthritic joints include night shade vegetables like potatoes, tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers.

Foods that alleviate symptoms include foods with beta carotene like parsley, broccoli, carrots, also apples and ginger are helpful. Cherry juice and pineapple juice have a positive effect. Throw in fish oil to boot.

Apparently, there has been success in treating arthritis through Chinese Medicine with acupuncture and herbal diets. Traditional western medications can result in unpleasant side-effects.

Oye, Hashem should keep all of us and our children healthy and happy.

Organic Seeds, Organic Thoughts

It's given over in the Zohar that no good intention is lost.

That is, all our generous thoughts, our positive wishful thinking, our dreams
or progress...are recorded.

There is a principle of accumulation that adds up the thousands of
wishes and leads finally to fulfillment.

There might be a lot of things going on in our life, all our daily dramas.
But here's a reminder for you and I to stop for a moment and ask ourselves,
'how can I make things better for myself?'
'how can I make things better for my friend?'

Our holy Sages write, "if I am only for myself, than who am I?"

Thoughts are very powerful. Prayer. Imagination. Yearnings.

G-d is searching out the ones who want to improve His world. We don't need
tons of money to do it. (Though it'd be nice!) But we do need to want good.

And wanting good means thinking good for ourselves and for others.

Truthfully, it is very hard to want good for others when there are tv shows and game shows that promote cruelty and mockery of others. And it's also difficult to imagine good when the propaganda in magazines and ads de-base Blacks. It is done very subtly, but it is being done.

Thoughts are like seeds. This is where everything starts. From here sprouts our beliefs, our actions, our likes, our dislikes, our perceptions, our teachings, our education to our children....

If our thoughts are "captured" in a box, then everything else is captured as well.
With all these genetically modified seeds, big businesses understand that beginnings are EVERYTHING

Now you know it, too.

We must fight to clean up our thoughts. Get it out of sexual immorality. Get it out of rage. Get it out of a hardened heart. Get it out of low self esteem. Get it out of stinginess.

As we do our small part in remaining physically healthy, we must invest even MORE effort in remaining healthy emotionally and spiritually on the most basic level.

The basic level: wanting good in the world.

Reminding ourselves that there CAN be good in the world. Whoa! What a novel idea!

Good thoughts, prayer, imagination, and yearnings.

This is the seed. And from it will sprout the positive actions to produce a garden of healthy souls.

A G-d-ly ecosystem, a tribal system where compassion, charity, patience, diligence, cooperation, and human life are valued, honed and taught to future generations.

Nothing is wasted.

G-d bless!!!

Earth People Rejoice!

Guest Post from Miriam at blackfirewhitefire.blogspot.com Thank you!

Hmmmm...most Earth People are probably not reading this blog.  They are maybe too busy going about their lives, feeding their children, tending to their farms, etc.  But I send this energy out to you all---Earth People, Rejoice!!

You have what to rejoice about...

Yep. people will look askance at the fact that you walk barefoot -or that you let your children walk barefoot. Primitive! right?

Well, I'll have you know that It has been known by the Chinese for 1000s of years that when we connect our body to the earth and the sky i.e. the Cosmos it helps to ground us and nourish our energy/Qi. In Chinese Medicine the meridians are described as energy/Qi channels, not seen by the average naked eye but may be experienced during acupuncture or by practicing Qigong or Thai Chi. Chi or Qi is a form of Mother Earth’s energy or Cosmic energy. In the world of Yogis the Cosmic energy is referred to as Prana. This energy from the Cosmos can be taken/absorbed via many body antennas like our tongue, nostrils, hands and feet and so on.   In Chinese Medicine the Bubbling Well point or kidney 1 (K1 starts on the ball of the foot) is seen as the major entryway or portal for the absorption of Earth’s surface Qi.  And the Chinese believe in practicing Qigong outdoors and if possible barefoot amongst nature in the warmer weather. (you can read more here).

And of course, people will look askance at the "animalistic" way of childbirth that you have...Sh! don't tell anyone this, but people are trying to copy you!!! Even as they sling mud at your people and your ways, they are aggressively copying your methods (see any Ina Mae Gaskin books) And they are giving themselves the credit, while poo pooing Blacks and others for seeking (or should I say for having been convinced by those same people who are now patting themselves on the back for being so "natural") medical intervention --nevermind that it was non-Earth people who started the whole medical intervention (King Louis wanted to see a birth, so had the first lady layed out in that horrid position to bear a child.).

Then comes the nursing. A great way to feed your baby! Even that is being 'relearned' so take heart!

Earth People -Rejoice! Even your diet is being examined and soon to be copied.

If you don't have a television in your home, it may be people will think lowly of you, but I think its great! you can avoid all the depressing advertisement that try to convince you that you lack and lack and lack.

So go ahead, clap your hands! let your left fingers meet your right ones, combine the lovingkindness with strictness and break any evil decree imposed upon you!

Yes, dance and bring down good things....

Keep yourselves in purity: ruining someone sexually is a weapon employed frequently.

and among yourselves, rejoice!

(this was just a poetic post. I know that even Earth People have issues and problems.).

G-d bless!

Chodesh Tov!

The Hebrew month of Tammuz starts today. May this new month bring blessings, peace, health, joy, and the actualization of our good potential.

Orange Tree Lady

There is an orange tree outside of my window. I never paid much attention to it until a couple of days ago.
It seemed I could make out a shape on the rough, textured bark. It was a shape of woman's torso.
Two perfectly placed swelling marked the breasts. And at the bottom right was another bump.
This third swelling seemed to ruin the tree sculpture however.

The first thing that came to mind was that it looked like a fibroid. It was exactly where I had mine as well.
Oh, those days struggling with fibroids were really difficult, and I'm glad it is in the past.
And yet, there is a fear that lingers.
A fear that if I'm not perfectly stringent on my diet, that it will return.
There have been frantic nights when I fall into a panic when a sensation or two
felt out of place.
It was usually gas.
But I don't want the fear to be my motivator to be healthy.
B/c fear is only a temporary solution.
It will keep things in line only for so long.
I want my motivation to be having energy to live my life, to go my yoga class, to go to work, having healthy, glowing skin, having positive thoughts, and the like.

Fear is so crippling.
It makes healthy eating a chore, and nobody likes 'chores.'
But the idea of being the best me. Being the happy me is what gives me fire. Suddenly going to the kitchen isn't a dread, it's an adventure. My creative juices start to flow, and I seek out ways on how I can jazz up my salad, what new herbal tea to drink, or what new cooking experiment to try.
It's a completely different perspective and attitude.
Now, it's true that prevention of illness plays an important role. It does keep me in check. It's the preliminary stage.

So, what of this orange tree lady outside my window?? What is she trying to tell me?
I like to think that she is saying, "look how far you've come! Do more and teach me too!"

Ok, I'm gonna turn on my Creative power and rev up my Creative engine.
There is so much good stuff out there to learn about. Stuff that builds and strengthens.
From the earth.

I have this amazing friend named Rina who whips up natural desserts from fruits, carobs and all things healthy like frozen banana slush and delicious carob balls that taste just like chocolate. Such a blessing! She has her own story of healing. But this is what I'm talking about.

And I don't need to be super-rich to create. Creativity is such a wide venue that can take form in so many ways. It doesn't even have to be limited to food!
Dr. Northrup writes how fibroids can be a physical reaction to not fullfilling one's dreams.

Statistics show that many African American women suffer more from fibroids than any other group. Whether the stats are true is a different post, but either way, let's make sure it is not the reality. Creativity begins in the mind. But we have to beware the things in life that take away from it, like negative thinking or friends. This includes any television, magazine, or media with unhealthy and negative messages. Excessive sexuality also detracts from our powers.

But to get creative begins with brainstorming. What's possible? How far can I take things? Contrary to popular belief, we are not stuck. Things might seem difficult, but we can make things move. So, what ideas do you have? Do I have? A different hair style? Learning a new language? Writing poetry? Buying a potted plant? Taking an art class? Giving a singing class?

All right, Orange Tree Lady, I hear your message. Get more creative, do more, and live more!! I can do it!

G-d bless!

CocoNut Oil

Today, more so in previous years, there's a lot of talk how saturated fat is harmful to our health. However, now it's being revealed that past studies were using trans-fats-hydrogenated oil.

Oil becomes hydrogenated when hydrogen gas is forced into the oil at high pressure, resulting in a chemical change in the oil, but also resulting in a product that is more "stable" -in that it will take a longer time to spoil. Hence, longer shelf life. But short health life considering that they cause havoc in the body. Margarine and vegetable shortening, shortening are hydrogenated. Unfortunately when we eat margarine, our body does not reject them. Instead they are used in our cell membranes as if they were the correct fats (cis fats) And thus chemical reactions are thus skewed. Plus, "over 90 percent of all soy, corn, and canola oils are made from genetically engineered seeds."

But there is a good guy/gal in this story.
I remember in the past when coconuts and any derivative thereof was shunned. However, again past studies were focusing on hydrogenated oils. (Liars!) Coconut oil, in fact, has been found to have tremendous health benefits.

First off, b/c it's saturated, it's more stable for cooking needs. It's not going to go rancid at high temperatures like canola, corn oil. It's lauric acid has anti-viral, anti-fungal, and anti-microbial properties. It's fat is easily digested for quick energy rather than stored as fat. And it strengthens the immune system. It helps prevent heart disease and even reduce abdominal obesity. It is even found to be helpful in the treatment of AIDS.

I find it really disturbing how statistics can be manipulated and lead people to start consuming unhealthy things in all innocence. And although it's a blessing that there's an awareness of healthy eating, we cannot be fooled. Even natural health food movements may have their agenda when it comes to money.

Simple is always best. Home-grown is always best. Local is always best. Natural food versus supplement is always best. Incorporating raw foods is always best. Eating in moderation is always best. Eating things you can pronounce is always best. Unprocessed and unbleached coconut oil is always best.

Coconut oil is white, semi-solid in cool weather and creamy colored oil in hot weather.

An Apple A Day

In Hebrew, the word for apple is TaPuAch HaAiTz-apple of the tree. And the word for potato is TaPuaAch HaADaMa-apple of the land.

And sure enough, these are "apples" that people eat quite frequently. With apple's anti-oxidant powers and potatoes' vitamin C, B6, and health promoting phytochemicals it's not hard to see why.

Yet these favored apples when conventionally grown have more pesticides than other fruits and vegs.

"Don't panic 'cuz I'm organic!"

It would be ideal to get all our produce organic. However, if it's a financial strain, know that most plant food contain less pesticides than animal food b/c there is less accumulation. There are some produce like avocados and cabbage that don't even necessarily need to be purchased organic.

But let's shop 'smart'. And that doesn't only mean saving dollars and shekels. It means also saving our health. So, if we favor apples, whether they grow on trees or grow from the ground, let's opt for the organic kind and encourage others to do so as well.

Less pesticides.

More life.

G-d bless!

(Note that potatoes are nightshade vegetables. That is, these veggies (like eggplant and tomatoes) can pull out calcium from the bone. So if someone is not consuming dairy products go easy on 'dem potatoes)

Who's the Caveman?

I read an article how Unilever brought scientists together to try to re-discover what was the diet of the caveman of 12,000 years in order to "enhance" modern day nutrition.

It seems the hunter-gatherer our ancestors subsisted on vegetables, fruits, nuts, roots, and meat. This is not rocket science. There were no cereal, bread, potatoes or even milk. People only adapted to milk later on (although there are many today who are lactose intolerant.)

"Palaeolithic man was not a raging carnivore. He was an omnivore who loved his greens. He would have gathered seeds to eat, used plants and herbs for flavoring and preserving fish and meat, and collected wild berries."

Yeah, everyone likes to spew how the cave people were so primitive and backward.
And how cultures who "resemble" them are also to be pitied. Well, nutritionally, they were doing far better than we are in our modern world. With today's genetically modified 'foods', hybrids, and Twinkies-stuffing that do nothing to truly nourish us, who exactly is the backward cavemen?

G-d bless!

Amalek

Every age has its myths, its trends to be idolized and followed by the "masses." Most people follow the trend and seek to identify with them and its role models. It's a very powerful current and it's very difficult not to get caught up in it. After all we want to be seen as "normal."

However, many myths and trends, created by Amalek, conceal truths and form a web of lies designed to plunge people into great ignorance, exploitation, and ultimately death.
Never heard of Amalek??
Truth is you've already met him. Them.
It is an idea and the people (who may be white or black) that enforce it. Perversion of justice.
Their main tool: deception.

We exhale carbon dioxide.
So, what exactly is the plan to lower the numbers of carbon dioxide emissions?
World population is about 9 billion.
"If we do a really great job with new vaccines, healthcare, and reproductive health services, we can lower that by perhaps 10 to 15 percent..."

Sounds fishy?

Sounds farfetched?

Good.

You've just officially met Amalek.

Corn Sugar

Beware!! With the growing consumers' awareness that high fructose corn syrup is unhealthy, The Corn Refiners Association want to drop the name corn syrup and instead use "corn sugar."

Israel and Africa

Israel has been teaching their drip irrigation to countries in West Africa. The drip system, developed in the 1960s, allow farmers to have more efficient use of water and allows them to care for specific plants without over watering. Erratic rains and food shortage have left countries like Senegal in dire straits. Now instead of having one harvest a year from rain, drip irrigation allows three harvests per year.

Steadfast...

Praise G-d!
Fortunate is the man who fears G-d;
His commandments he greatly desires.

Mighty upon the earth will be his seed,
a generation of the upright who will be blessed.

Wealth and riches are in his house
and his righteousness endures forever.

He causes to shine in the darkness
a light for the upright (for He is)
gracious, compassionate and righteous.

Good is the man who is gracious and lends,
who conducts his affairs with justice.

For he will never be moved
as an everlasting remembrance
will the righteous remain.

He will not fear evil tidings
steadfast is his heart, trusting in G-d.

His heart is steadfast, he will not fear,
even before he sees his adversaries (downfall).

(Widely distributed charity)
he dispersed to the needy;
his righteousness endures forever.
his horn will be exalted with honor.

The wicked will it and be angered,
he will gnash his teeth and melt away;
the desire of the wicked will perish.

G-d bless!
